Each issue is an opportunity to celebrate who we are: a diverse, innovative team eager to make an impact. ✨
In this edition you’ll find:
Because what we build goes beyond projects we’re building the future, together.
Let’s keep moving forward together toward new challenges! 💪

1. Project Overview
The client, Natech, first approached us through an architect who represented the property owner and, in the early stages, acted as the project developer before the official authorities. After some time, that professional relationship came to an end and he was replaced by another architect recommended by Valtria, with whom we have collaborated for several years and who continues to serve as part of the supervisory team to this day.
Natech is a company dedicated to the cultivation and, in the future, the drying of cannabis for medicinal purposes. It is based in the Lisbon metropolitan area, specifically in Seixal, on the southern bank of the River Tagus.
This project is of particular significance for Valtria Portugal, as it demonstrates our ability to deliver complex turnkey solutions. It is a design-and-build project covering an area of approximately 3,000 m².
As the largest contract we have signed to date, valued at around eight million euros, it brings together an exceptionally wide range of disciplines. These include architecture and structural stability (with a steel framework), medium-voltage systems, general electrical works, ITED, HVAC and related electrical systems, as well as centralised technical management (BMS + EMS), smoke extraction, plumbing, fire networks, drainage, fire detection, purified water, and compressed air.
This broad scope allows us to position ourselves in the market as a comprehensive partner capable of providing turnkey solutions with strong in-house expertise. We have demonstrated the capacity to manage every phase of project delivery, even in areas such as civil works and medium-voltage infrastructure, where few of our national competitors are willing to venture.
2. Current Progress
The project broke ground in November 2024 and is now entering the commissioning phase. We expect to hand over the facility to the client by the end of 2025.
As with many of our other projects, even those of smaller scale, the level of involvement and coordination required from the team has been both demanding and rewarding. This is due not only to the wide range of trades involved, as mentioned earlier, but also to the tight schedule set for a project of this scale. It has been a true collective effort from the entire Valtria Portugal team from Engineering in the early stages, through Production, HSA, Design, Procurement, and finally Commissioning.
🔹Three colleagues, in particular, deserve special recognition for their full-time dedication to the project: José Santos (Project Manager), Nuno Piloto (Site Supervisor), and Nuno Escola Piloto (Assistant). We extend our sincere appreciation and congratulations to them all well done!
3. Innovative Technologies
Natech was the first project in which we implemented Dalux directly on site. One of the key advantages of this digital platform is its ability to streamline project preparation and coordination, ensuring faster and more efficient execution during the construction phase [...]

At Edwards (Valencia), we are developing a truly special project.
It stands out not only for its technical complexity but also for the exceptional team making it possible.
More than 80% of the people working on this site are women a figure that breaks new ground in the sector and reflects the diversity and talent driving Valtria forward.
Interestingly, this reality is mirrored on the client’s side, where the majority of Edwards’ team members are also women. Two teams, two cultures, and one shared goal united by female leadership that makes a difference in every decision and every stage of progress.
Although the team also includes male professionals in construction and engineering roles, the strong female presence takes centre stage and gives Edwards a unique hallmark: proof that the future of engineering and construction is also written in the language of equality.
To gain a deeper insight into what this experience is like from the inside, we spoke with Rocío Cerezo, Cristina Parra, Karolina Danko, and Cristina Martínez four professionals who are part of the project. They shared their thoughts on teamwork, technical challenges, and what it means to lead a project of this scale from a female perspective.

1. About the Project and the Team
What makes the Edwards project special for you?
The Edwards project is special because it combines a major technical challenge with a highly dedicated team and a large workload. We’re not only developing a highly complex project but doing so from a place of collaboration and mutual respect. It’s inspiring to see so many women contributing their talent, vision, and professional rigor to the project.
How would you describe the work environment within the team?
The atmosphere is collaborative and supportive. We help each other and learn from one another. There’s a climate of trust that allows everyone to share ideas freely, something essential when working on demanding projects.
What would you highlight about the people who make up the team?
I’d emphasize the passion and commitment. Every person on the team, from engineering to management and on-site execution, brings their experience and energy toward a common goal: making Edwards a benchmark for quality and innovation. Empathy and active listening are ever-present, which strengthens us as a group.
2. On Female Presence
Edwards is a project where most of the team members are women, something rare in this sector. What does that diversity bring to daily work?
Diversity enriches us in every sense. Having different ways of thinking and communicating allows us to analyze challenges from multiple perspectives and find more creative and effective solutions. It also fosters a more collaborative and less hierarchical environment.
What qualities do you think you bring to it, both technically and personally?
Women often bring great organizational skills, attention to detail, and an integrative perspective that blends the technical with the human.
We strive to keep communication flowing across all areas so that no one is left out. Empathy and cooperation are as vital as technical precision.

How does that diversity influence decision-making and work management? It has a very positive influence. Decisions are made more collectively and with everyone’s input, which leads to more solid results since every voice is heard. With different leadership styles, we achieve a balance between firmness and sensitivity, between results and well-being.
3. On Leadership
Would you say that female leadership has a particular way of facing challenges?
Yes, though it’s not about being “better” or “worse,” but different. Female leadership tends to be more horizontal, based on communication, empathy, and motivation. We aim to inspire, not impose. In complex projects like Edwards, this translates into more cohesive, committed, and resilient teams.
4. Conclusion
If you had to describe the Edwards team in one word, what would it be?
Unstoppable. Because every day we prove that, with talent, teamwork, and inclusive leadership, there’s no challenge we can’t overcome.
➜ In addition, the project’s Engineering Manager, Adrián Alvaredo, also wanted to share his perspective, highlighting the importance of teamwork and how the diversity of profiles has helped address technical challenges with a more comprehensive and inclusive approach.
• Do you remember the moment you realized that most of the team were women? What did you think?
Yes, I remember it was during a Teams meeting, when the project was already well underway. I noticed that everyone joining the call—both from the client and from Valtria were women. It caught my attention in a very positive way because I had never experienced a situation like that before. I think it reflects the necessary change our sector needs, as it benefits everyone and promotes both professional and personal growth through diversity: diversity in the way we work, think, and interact with our colleagues.
• As a leader, what have you learned from working with a team with such a strong female presence?
The first thing I’ve learned is that when it comes to project design and management, there are no differences between genders in terms of ability, commitment, or results. However, having such a diverse team brings flexibility and a variety of perspectives that enrich our daily work and allow us to tackle challenges more creatively and effectively. This diversity will undoubtedly be reflected in the higher quality of this project’s outcome and in future ones as well.

| Elena González Global Manager of VDC |
David Mena Digital Lead |
Throughout this interview, we’ll cover topics such as:
1. About the Department
How would you describe the BIM Area and its role within Valtria in just a few words?
The BIM Area is made up of a team of people who work closely with project, construction, and engineering managers.
We see ourselves as both a technical and human support within Valtria’s larger production team helping ensure that each project meets company standards, client requirements, and local regulations, always following the guidance of the project lead.
What is the main purpose of the department?
The purpose of the BIM Area is to facilitate collaboration and precision at every stage of a project.
We act as a connector between teams: project, construction, and engineering managers share their knowledge and needs, and we transform them into a coordinated digital twin that anticipates potential issues and provides the client with a clearer view of what the installation or project will look like.
If you had to summarize the BIM Area in one phrase or motto to present it to the rest of the company, what would it be?
“Supporting the team to build together the digital twin of our projects.” “We connect design, technology, and knowledge to create smart and collaborative projects.”

2. Projects
When a new project arrives at the company, how does the BIM Area start working on it? What phases do you follow, how do you coordinate with other departments, and how do tools like Dalux help organize the workflow from start to finish?
When a new project arrives at Valtria, the BIM Area begins working right from the start alongside the project, construction, and engineering managers.
Everything kicks off after the Kick-Off meeting, where we align on objectives, scope, and all initial client information. From there, we review the documentation and define how we’re going to model the project always following Valtria’s standards, client requirements, and local regulations, under the guidance of the project lead.
Our team of modelers and designers creates a digital twin, a virtual version that mirrors as closely as possible the reality of what will later be built. This model allows us to detect errors early, improve coordination between departments, and maintain smooth communication.
During execution, we continue to collaborate, updating the model and using tools like Dalux, which enable us to share information in real time and support our colleagues so that the entire process remains clear, efficient, and well-coordinated.
3. The Human Team

What unites us as a BIM team is collaboration and shared commitment. We’re a group of modelers and designers who are passionate about digitalization naturally curious and, yes, a bit of innovation geeks. We love testing new tools, finding more efficient ways to work, and applying technology to improve projects and make life easier for our colleagues.
But beyond the technical side, what truly defines us is how we support one another. In moments of high pressure or tight deadlines, there’s always someone ready to help, share an idea, or solve a problem together.
We bring much more than technical knowledge we bring energy, empathy, and enthusiasm. We believe technology is just a tool, but what truly transforms projects are the people who know how to work together with trust, passion, and respect.
How do you think the rest of the company perceives the BIM team, and what would you like them to know about you?
I think many people in the company still see us as being in a learning phase and that’s true, we’re growing and learning every day.
But we’d also like them to know that they can get much more out of us.
We’re a team passionate about digitalization, eager to contribute, to be more involved in projects, and to share our vision for improvement.
We’re driven by curiosity, a desire to learn, and the wish to feel part of every success. Ultimately, we’re here to add value, to support, and to keep growing alongside all our Valtria colleagues.
4. Dalux
Could you share an example where the use of BIM and Dalux made a real difference in a specific project?
While recognizing the outstanding work of everyone who has embraced the tool, the true turning point in implementing Dalux at Valtria was the Sunlight project in Greece.
We started in a country where we had barely any operational structure. Dalux allowed us to develop and execute a particularly challenging project with a multi-location team (Greece, Madrid, Bilbao, Buenos Aires...), efficiently implementing workflows centered around the “I” in BIM information.
This tool has significantly improved access to up-to-date information, digitized and streamlined tasks that were previously very manual, and, as a result, increased our overall operational efficiency.
Although we’ve been working in 3D (Revit) for years, we’re now taking the next step: integrating the BIM methodology across all phases of our projects.
To achieve this, we need the support and involvement of every department. BIM is not just a model or a drawing it’s a way of working together from the very beginning, preventing errors and improving coordination.
I believe the future of BIM at Valtria will be collaborative, where everyone takes part and sees it as a tool that connects teams, enhances processes, and helps us build more efficiently and sustainably.

Controlling costs while safeguarding quality and regulatory compliance is one of the greatest challenges in the pharmaceutical sector. Nowhere is this more evident than in the design of GMP (Good Manufacturing Practice) facilities for advanced therapies such as CAR-T. Here, the balance between capital expenditure (CAPEX) and operational expenditure (OPEX) becomes central to making informed, long-term decisions.
This article explains both concepts and how they impact design decisions, with a special focus on comparing open and closed models for advanced therapy manufacturing and their short- and long-term economic implications.

Understanding CAPEX and OPEX
Reducing CAPEX can appear attractive at the start of a project. Yet, in practice, cutting corners on initial investment often leads to disproportionately higher OPEX over the lifetime of the facility undermining overall profitability.
Illustrative Examples
The lesson is simple: short-term savings in CAPEX can quickly be outweighed by long-term operational costs.
Two Design Philosophies in Advanced Therapies
In today’s cell and gene therapy facilities, two GMP design approaches dominate: the open model and the closed model. Each offers advantages, but their economic implications differ sharply.
The open model is based on production directly within classified rooms, with manual intervention in high-cleanliness environments, where people and materials follow a rigorous access sequence. This approach requires large classified areas and greater environmental control due to the product’s direct exposure to the environment. [...]

Business Development, Valencia
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I’m from Barcelona. My parents emigrated in the 1960s from Lugo and Cuenca in search of a better future than what their small hometowns – two tiny villages with 17 and 112 houses respectively – could offer.
They decided to start a family, and I’m the eldest of two brothers. I spent my childhood and youth between the stoves of our family business and my studies at La Salle.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO JOIN VALTRIA?
I decided to join Valtria because of the kind of company I believed it was – and I’ve since confirmed that it truly is: a well-structured company with solid technical resources, strong financial stability, a recognised position in its market segment, and a clear upward trajectory.

WHAT DO YOU LIKE ABOUT VALTRIA?
The way people relate to one another within the company – no matter the position or where your colleagues are based. More than bosses, what I’ve found are teammates. You can talk to anyone, and anyone can talk to you. We ask and collaborate, share opinions, exchange ideas – in short, we all try to row in the same direction towards the same goal. If you can contribute, why wouldn’t you?
For me, Valtria is a company where everyone adds value.
TELL US A WORD THAT DEFINES YOU
For me, the word that best defines me – as a director at a previous job once told me – is “ETHOS”. I didn’t know what it meant at the time; I had to look it up and ask him why.
His answer was, “Because of your credibility, character, and ability to inspire trust.” I’ve carried that with me ever since.
